I mean pendant light fixtures.

Did you ever consider painting it?

We have a lot of lights correct now that are ok in shape, non color. (Well, except for the puppet lights – those take to go!)

Nosotros love our brand new construction home here in NC.  But the light fixtures they chose?  Ehh.  Very builder-y.

They are stainless steel, which isn't horrible.

Just with gray cabinets, greyness counters, and stainless steel appliances (oh, and our couch is a dark grayness), we are on greyness overload!!

Some of the lighting we have completely taken downwardly and replaced.  Others, like those infamous boob lights, accept a few more months (years!??) to alive before I tackle them.

Ane fixture that needed a modify correct away was the pendant calorie-free in our breakfast nook.

Information technology'due south the pocket-sized area off our kitchen where we eat dinner most nights.

Unless we are feeling fancy and desire to swallow in the dining room.  "I'm and so fancyyyyy … y'all already know … I'm in the fast lane …"  Ok, lamentable.  It felt right to showtime singing.

Anyways, the shape of this fixture isn't bad.  I like it.  But once more, the stainless steel color is and so overused in this house I'k going a niggling crazy.

1 of my favorite colors is blackness.  And blackness seems to become with a lot of our decor. I simply love it as an emphasis in near rooms.  Then I took my favorite spray pigment and painted information technology.

This is one of those projects where at that place is no going back.  But if I didn't like how information technology turned out, we would but buy a new i.  At some indicate.

Luckily, it turned out amazing!

You would never know that this calorie-free fixture wasn't originally black.  I'm going to show you how to do this and it'due south so like shooting fish in a barrel.

Things You'll Need

  • Rustoleum Paint and Primer
  • Sandpaper
  • Painter'south Tape
  • Tack Cloth

How to Paint a Metallic Calorie-free Fixture

I bankrupt this process down into elementary steps – it might seem like each step is a lot, just it really doesn't accept long after you tape everything off.

Step i:  Turn off power and Prep your fixture for painting

The almost important thing when working with any electrical device is to turn off the power to the fixture.

Go alee and switch off that circuit billow. And make sure it's actually off.

We took our fixture down completely and then I could spray pigment it outside.

Can you pigment a light fixture without taking it down?

Yes, you can!

But it's a footling more than tricky this way.  And here'southward why.

While you don't need to take information technology down, you will need to tape off walls, floors, move furniture, and accept some cardboard handy to use as a spray painting screen.

If you mess up, you lot'll have to sand down your pigment carefully without pulling on the fixture too much.  It also could exist difficult to get the top of the fixture where it meets the ceiling, without really painting the ceiling.

Still, if you lot use a lot of painter'southward tape and a cardboard screen around where you lot're painting, so aye you can absolutely exercise it.

Later taking downwards the light fixture (or skipping this if you lot are painting it without taking it down) yous'll accept to tape off the areas y'all don't want to be painted.

The cord, and the entire inside of the fixture, including the socket.

Take some sandpaper and lightly sand your fixture.

Our fixture is metal, so lightly sanding it gives a coat of spray paint more bonding power.  I promise you won't see the scratches after spray painting.

Accept a tack textile or a clean, dry rag and remove all the dust, clay, and droppings from your fixture.

Now you lot're fix to paint!

Step ii:  Spray Paint Your Fixture

Time to paint!

No going back now.  Hahahahahahaha. Ahahahahahahahah, hahaha, haha. ha. (evil laugh.)

Spray paint using light coats – this ensures the paint won't drip and run.  I applied 2-3 coats and each coat took around five minutes to dry exterior.  Information technology won't completely cure for about 24 hours or more.

What if I mess up?

I messed up when I accidentally tried to remove a piece of grass that blew onto the fixture and stuck there.

It left a small fingerprint mark.  If this happens to y'all, all you need to do is expect for that glaze of paint to dry, and then take fine-dust sandpaper and sand it down polish.

The sanding will remove the paint and the blemish with it.

Then, remove the sanding dust with a cloth and spray paint that section once again.  Like shooting fish in a barrel peasy!

Pace three:  Allow your fixture to dry for 24 hours

Go out your fixture alone for 24 hours later on painting.  No touching! Don't even look at it.  I'm only kidding.  You can await at it.

I left mine go for a full 24 hours and and so it was ready to hang over again.

Hang it up and fire that bad boy on! (That means, turn on the power.)

The After – Our end upshot!

And hither'due south how our light looks now.

Much better!

Information technology looks like a new light! I just love this new await to our breakfast nook.

Our house is looking pretty bare-bones right at present, but I can't wait to add more than character to this nook soon.

Can I spray paint any light fixture?

This sounds a piffling like an infomercial, but with Rustoleum Spray Paint and Primer, it adheres to plastic, forest, concrete, drinking glass, metal, and more.  So I would say yep you admittedly tin!

Bathroom vanity lights, pendant lights, chandeliers, and more.  It's so of import to carefully prep your fixture. Make sure areas are taped off with painter'southward tape – that will ensure a much amend cease upshot.

And so don't toss those light fixtures just yet!  If the shape is skilful then just spray pigment them.  Information technology's a great mode to save coin and transform your electric current lighting!
